• The Preciosa 940 is one of the most recognisable oversized glasses designs ever produced. finished here in classic polished black acetate, its huge square lenses, substantial proportions and uncompromising silhouette make this a genuine statement frame. Designed in Holland by Hans Borsboon, the 940 dates back to the 1970s and became known in America as the Goliath. The design went on to develop a cult following through film and hip-hop culture and is particuarly famous as the Preciosa 940 worn by Robert De Niro as Sam "Ace" Rothstein in Casino (1995). The frame has also been associated with Run-DMC and other musicians and performers over the years. Frame Holland itself confirms the 940's connection with Casino and Robert De Niro. Unlike an original 1970s vintage frame, these are current-production Preciosa 9040 glasses, still designed and manufactured in the Netherlands by Frame Holland. Preciosa frames are produced from quality cellulose acetate, with important stages of their manufacture and finishing still carried out by hand. The solid black colourway really suits the scale of the 940. It emphasises the deep square shape and thick acetate construction and is the classic choice for anyone looking for the unmistakable Goliath appearance. This is a very large frame, designed to look deliberately oversized.
